When Heavy Traffic Is Actually Your Goal

Situation

Having recently acquired an underperforming luxury hotel in Orange County, Calif., Fairmont Hotels & Resorts needed an immediate shot in the arm in the form of increased traffic and publicity for its grand opening. With the vast untapped potential of Los Angeles and San Diego within an hour’s drive, a key challenge faced by the client was the general assumption that Orange County was homogenous and uninteresting.

Action

Through a special invitation mailer with a die-cut envelope and a series of direct mailings, Fairmont was able to recast Orange County as a center of affluence and power, an attractive locale for day trips and diversions, and a slower-paced destination where fine dining and entertainment are always at hand.

Results

The invitation and the mailers worked – more than 2,000 people attended the Fairmont’s Grand Opening. The hotel today performs admirably in its market segment.
