A New Icon of Success

Situation

So, when your international hotel chain’s brand identity is always refined, cosmopolitan and understatedly luxurious, how do you adapt to the glitz and over-the-top hype that is Las Vegas, without being overwhelmed by it? That was the challenge of Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas' opening in December 2009. How to be tasteful in the neon capital of the world? How to symbolize, at a glance, that this property was unique, tranquil and beautiful?

Action

Working with architectural renderings and discussing the overall concept of the yet-to-be completed property, USFI discovered a key factor - a deep appreciation for every guest and the opportunity to serve them. To reflect that appreciation and express the Asian heritage of the hotel’s operators, USFI crafted a Mandarin Chinese symbol for “appreciation” into an icon to appear on high-profile branded items. And, while not every guest understands Mandarin, all are mysteriously drawn to discover the meaning of this handsome character.

Results

At a glance, potential guests see something about this property that stands apart from the surrounding  “culture.” As they discover the property’s distinctive style of service, they learn that Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas' owners, operators and employees are, in fact, highly appreciative of the opportunity to serve. As USFI rolls out designs on all the property’s materials, a new icon is emerging in Las Vegas, and the city anticipates this oasis of appreciation, civility and beauty.
