USFI Difference #6

We think big. When we ask, “what if,” we mean it. When our clients ask, “when,” we love it. We accept no limits and know no fear. Here’s what that’s gotten us into lately.

Authentically Re-Creating the 18th-Century Internet

Situation

More than one million visitors a year love everything about Colonial Williamsburg, the nation’s premier colonial theme park, where the 17th and 18th centuries come to life. But single visits might tend to reinforce the idea that history is static and uninteresting once one has learned what one can. So how best to keep thousands of potential return visitors apprised of this ever-changing source of living history?

Action

USFI quickly determined that updates on museum activities could best be conveyed through the modern version of the colonial period’s town crier: e-mail. While a printed newsletter might seem a more likely medium for sharing information, the town crier had certain real advantages – short lead times, immediate and attention-getting delivery, and the implicit trust of all who heard him – all shared by the monthly e-blasts designed, produced and delivered by USFI.

Results

Interest in and awareness of Colonial Williamsburg is at an all-time high, according to its stewards. With timely and informative updates delivered in a design environment closely tied to the institution's website and printed materials, the park is is able to fulfill its mission, attract more visits each year and bring history to life – for those who enter its gates and those who simply read their e-mail.
